INDUSTRIAL RO PROJECT CASE STUDY

5,000 LPH Industrial Reverse Osmosis Systems for Boiler Projects

This industrial RO system for boiler water was supplied for an Australian industrial plant. Rated at 5,000 LPH, the system treats groundwater with a feed-water TDS of 986 ppm and produces purified water for stable boiler supply.

Project Overview

Start with the customer's real production requirement

This case study is based on a 5000 liters/hour reverse osmosis project in operation in Australia. The system was configured according to the client’s production requirements, a feed water TDS value of 986 ppm, and the plant’s 380V/50Hz three-phase four-wire power supply.

Customer Requirement

  • For use in factory boiler supply

  • Rated product water treatment capacity: 100 tons/day

  • Daily operation: 20 hours

  • Electrical design compatible with Australian factory power systems

  • Roller-mount design for easy relocation

  • Easy maintenance and simple consumable replacement

Engineering Focus

The total dissolved solids (TDS) content of the influent alone is insufficient to determine a complete treatment solution. When determining pretreatment, recovery, and membrane configuration, hardness, alkalinity, silica, iron, chlorine, microbial status, and the required final water quality standards should also be considered.

Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary, incorporating existing water quality testing information, as well as factors such as water color and taste.

Treatment Process

Treatment Logic for 986 ppm Feed Water

The RO section is designed around the complete water chemistry, required product-water quality, operating hours and production demand—not TDS alone.

Selected Stage

Pretreatment

Based on the complete feed water analysis results, a suitable process was selected to protect the reverse osmosis membrane. The final configuration included quartz sand filtration and activated carbon adsorption for pretreatment of the client's water.

Raw WaterQuartz sand FilterActivated Carbon
Quartz sand: Intercepts suspended solids and particles in water, reducing suspended solids levels.

Activated carbon: Reduces discoloration and odor in water, as well as some metal ions.
Selected Stage

Fine Filtration

Reduce particulate load before the high-pressure pump and membrane section. The selection of filter cartridge ratings and housing sizes is designed to protect downstream equipment. Furthermore, an antiscalant system is added to reduce the risk of membrane fouling.

Selected Stage

Reverse Osmosis

This method can reduce dissolved salt content, etc., and is ultimately used for the plant water required for boilers. Five VONTRON ULP-8040 series membranes are arranged in series.

*Why not use 4040 membranes?

For medium and large-scale reverse osmosis systems, 8040 membranes will be used compared to 4040 reverse osmosis membranes. 8040 membranes have a larger water treatment capacity per unit and can reduce the number of membranes required.
Selected Stage

Storage / Supply

Balances production demand and supplies the downstream jam-production process. Tank volume, material, level control and distribution pressure are selected for the operating schedule.

System Configuration

What the 5,000 LPH System Should Document

In this project, the core component brands and materials used in the reverse osmosis system

01

Raw Water Pump

A SHIMAGE brand stainless steel centrifugal pump is used. The appropriate influent flow rate is matched to the required throughput of the RO system. Here, a 10 cubic meter per hour pump is used.

02

Pretreatment System

The quartz sand and activated carbon filtration system effectively reduces water turbidity and removes unpleasant colors and odors.

03

Placed before the precision filter, the scale inhibitor reduces the risk of rapid fouling of the downstream membrane module.

04

Cartridge Filter

Equipped with a 40-inch 5-micron precision PP cotton filter element and a stainless steel filter housing.

05

High-Pressure Pump

A SHIMAGE brand reverse osmosis pump is used, matched to the 5,000 L/h permeate requirement and the calculated RO operating pressure.

06

RO Membranes

Choose the VONTRON 8040 ULP series module, which is equipped with 5 RO membrane modules in a series configuration.

07

Product-Water Tank

Select appropriate capacity and materials based on peak production periods and hygiene requirements. (Customer prepares these materials themselves.)

08

Control & Monitoring

Equipped with an automatic control valve, it enables automatic flushing and monitoring and alarm functions for conductivity, pressure, flow rate, and liquid level control.
